Lightning Mapping Data
An animation of the lightning sequence:
These figures show the electrical activity associated with three distinct explosive events.
The first explosion began at 07:48 UTC (11:48 PM AKDT).
The second and third explosions began
at 08:29 UTC (01:29 AM AKDT) and 08:43 UTC (01:43 AM AKDT), respectively.
Electrical activity was not present until about 3 minutes after the onset of
the first explosion, and consisted of small discrete discharges located over the
voclano. The frequency of the activity increased substantially around 08:05 UTC.
This sequence of activity was mostly concluded by 08:19.
The second explosion produced a brief (~20 s?) period of highly focussed, amorphous activity
over the vent, followed by an intense series of discharges persisting until about 08:48.
Lightning frequency decreased dramaticaly at this time. The last discharge occured at 09:09 UTC.
